Today in history-December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor Attack

Late 1941 – the United States is tense, as mainland Europe is controlled by Germany, and Britain shaky under a withering German air assault. On the other side of the world, over the Pacific, news is also grim: Japan had invaded China, prompting the U.S. to impose economic sanctions. And a crippled is about to take the first step towards obtaining the oil and rubber it needs by force from the American territories.
On this day, December 7, in 1941, the American naval base at Pearl Habor, with the entire American battleship fleet at anchor, suddenly found itself under attack by squadrons of Japanese warplanes with deadly aim. Within a matter of hours, the USS Arizona lays destroyed at the bottom of the harbor, with most of the rest of the ships badly damaged. By sheer luck, the centerpieces of the American fleet, the aircraft carriers, were on patrol far from the base at the time.
The attacks on September 2001 are often compared to the one on Pearl Harbor, and the similarities do not just end with the suddenness and devastation of the event. Both were brought about partly by missed warning signs. In the case of Pearl Harbor, the approaching Japanese squadrons were picked up by radar before they reached the base, but were mistaken by the radar men for a flight of American B-17 bombers due in from the mainland.

Security Beefed up in Otuoke as Jonathan Arrives for Brother ‘s Burial

Heavy security presence overwhelmed Otuoke, President Goodluck Jonathan’s home town Thursday as he arrived for the burial of his younger brother, Chief Meni Jonathan, which would take place Friday.
Meni  died two weeks ago at the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.
The President was received on his arrival by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, top government officials, security chiefs and family members who later briefed him privately on the funeral arrangements.
A detachment of security personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, police, State Security Service (SSS) as well as members of the civil defence corps were seen everywhere in the village as the President  Jonathan walked around to inspect the level of preparations for the burial.
Before his arrival yesterday, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, had been in Otuoke since Wednesday to put in place some arrangements for the burial.
After a meeting with his family members, the President visited the residence of his late brother where he commiserated with the wife and daughter before leaving for the Pa Lawrence Ebele Jonathan Memorial Hall where the corpse is expected to lie in state today.
A sober President Jonathan who came out of his brother’s residence with misty eyes was led to the community town hall where the community elders are expected to receive the corpse when it arrives from Abuja today.

From the community town hall, the president was led to the St. Steven’s Anglican Church where the requiem mass is expected to hold today.

Governor Dickson presents Adenuga’s N500m cheque to flood committee

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, on Thursday presented the N500m cheque he received from the Chairman, Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga, Jnr, to the state’s Post-Flood Management Committee.
Adenuga had donated the cheque to Bayelsa to support the government’s efforts in rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by floods in the state.
Dickson presented the cheque shortly after inaugurating the 16-man committee chaired by the former National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Azazi (retd), at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.
He tasked members of the committee to rehabilitate the flood victims and rebuild damaged infrastructure.
He implored the committee to seek support from within and outside the state, insisting that the damages beyond the state and Federal Government.
“Ninety per cent of the state with its critical infrastructures such as roads and bridges were completely ravaged,” he said.
Dickson, who appealed to individuals and organisations for support, said the government would utilise the resources judiciously.
The Governor commended his deputy, Mr. Gboribiogha Jonah, and members of his dissolved Emergency Response Management Committee for their efforts in handling the flood crisis in the state.
He explained that the post-flood committee was constituted to free government officials from active involvement in the flood management process.
He commended the people of the state and security agencies for their support, resilience and show of understanding throughout the period of the disaster.
Azazi in his response expressed appreciation to Dickson for the confidence reposed in him and members of his committee.
Describing the task ahead of them as Herculean, Azazi said the committee was determined to achieve its objectives.

Man accused of killing pregnant lover

The family of a lady, Gloria Akpan, has accused their daughter’s lover, Ita Eyo, of killing her in his residence in Ayobo area of Ogun State.
Gloria and Eyo both from Akwa Ibom State had been cohabiting since March 2012 before the sad incident occurred on November 3. The lady was six-month pregnant before she died.
A family source, who craved anonymity, said when he spoke to Gloria on Friday, a day before her death, she told him that all was well, adding that it was shocking to learn that she had died the next day.
The source said, “Without seeing any member of the family, that same Saturday, they hurriedly buried her.
“This is suspicious. The information we got was that she was strangled as she bled through her nose and mouth.”
Father of the deceased, Mr. Edet Akpan, 66, a retiree of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, corroborated the family source, insisting that his child was murdered.
Akpan told PUNCH Metro amid sobs, that Eyo, had in March this year asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
He said it was a transport operator, simply called Akintunde that brought Eyo to their home at NDLEA Compound at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Expectedly, Akpan said during the meeting, he told Eyo to come with his people when they were ready.
Akpan said, “After that meeting, I travelled to my country home in Akwa Ibom. Since I have retired, I have been alternating between home and Lagos.
“While I was still in my hometown, my wife, Gloria’s stepmother, phoned me. She said my daughter had moved out of the house. I exclaimed, ‘move to where?’ She said she had gone to Eyo’s house.
“She also said it was Eyo’s friend, Akintunde that came to take her to the place.
“The news jolted me and I had to rush back to Lagos. When I came back, I set out to search for her whereabouts but my effort was unsuccessful as I neither knew the address of Akintunde nor Eyo’s.”
He said he later got Akintunde on the phone.
Akpan said when he called Akintunde, Eyo and Gloria were with him.
He said, “When I got Akintunde on the phone, he handed the phone over to Eyo. After quarrelling with Eyo, I asked him to pass the phone to Gloria and he did.
“Gloria told me she was well and assured me that she would come home soon. I even asked of my grandson whom she took along with her and she said he was okay.”
Akpan lamented that instead of his daughter coming back home, the news he got the following day was that she had died.
He said, “On Saturday, Akintunde and a woman, came to inform me that my daughter had died. I was confused. I took them to my elder brother’s house. My elder brother asked them to deposit her corpse in the mortuary for further action.
“The same day, I asked my son to go to Eyo’s house. My son told me that they had buried my daughter. This was done without the knowledge of any member of the family. We find the development curious. This is somebody he was not married to. That is why we believe my daughter was murdered for some sinister purposes.”
He said another reason he suspected Eyo was culpable in his daughter’s death was the account of an eyewitness, Gloria’s son, who was living with them.
Akpan said his grandson, who Gloria had for another man, told him that on the fateful day, Eyo and his mother had a disagreement resulting in Eyo pulling something out of the bed and hitting her several times before she died.
He said he headed for a nearby police station in Ikeja, Lagos where they detailed three policemen to arrest Akintunde.
He said with the aid of the policemen, Akintunde took them to Eyo’s house in Ayobo, Ogun State.
He said when they got to Ayobo, it was discovered that that the part where Eyo lives is within the jurisdiction of Ogun State Police Command.
From there, he went to Itele Police Station in Ota, Ogun State where some policemen were detailed to arrest Eyo.
He said Eyo was currently being held at Itele Police Station.
He appealed to the relevant authorities to bring the killer of his daughter to justice.
A police source at Itele Police Division said the Commissioner of Police, Ogun Command, had directed that the matter be taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department.
The source, who did not want his name mentioned, said the Divisional Crime Officer confirmed that the suspect was still being detained.
However, he said the father of the deceased had refused to show up, stressing that the suspect claimed he (Akpan) consented to the burial of his daughter.
“The matter is a murder case; the suspect is still being detained. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the matter be taken to the SCID, Abeokuta,” the source said.

And this little old lady next to him asks ‘Are you famous?’
To which the rapper, who is arguably one of the most famous men on the planet replies: 'Not very famous, you don't know me. But I'll get there some day.'
He politely adds: 'My name is Jay, what's your name?'
She smiles answering: 'Ellen. What do you do?'
‘I make music,' he replies and tells her he has just completed eight shows before that.
'Fabulous,' Ellen replies. 'And you are getting on the subway. I'm proud of you.'
She then asks him to repeat his name, to which he says: 'Jay. Jay-Z,'
Then suddenly the lady gets it and says (sounding a little shocked): 'Oh, you're Jay-Z. I know about Jay-Z.'

Popslate launches iPhone 5 case with four-inch E Ink screen (video

This is pretty darn cool. It's called Popslate -- an iPhone 5 case with a four-inch E Ink screen on the back -- and it's launching right now on Indiegogo for $79 in two colors. Combined with a bespoke social imaging app, it lets you take and share pics, then "pop" them to the back of your phone. Better yet, the always-on, ultra low-power, black and white display becomes a canvas for notifications, sports scores, maps, lists and notes, all just a glance away.
An open API allows third-party developers to design custom apps for Popslate -- including accelerometer support to interact with the backside screen by tapping on it. Imagine a micro e-reader app which uses the E Ink display instead of the main panel to conserve battery.
The company is still in the early stages of development and sadly didn't have a prototype to show us, but it's already gathered a team of talented designers, engineers and developers. It's also secured a partnership with E Ink to use the latest in ruggedized e-paper technology and is hoping to raise enough funds to make Popslate a reality. Two colors are available at launch (black and white) with prices starting at $79 for the first 500 supporters, then $99 and up. Hit the break for the demo video and IndieGogo link.
